In Fort Worth, today is a new day, and a new mayor will be sworn in for the first time in ten years.
Not only is Mattie Parker, 37, set to become the youngest mayor in Fort Worth's history, she'll also be the youngest mayor of any major U.S. city. And she says she's excited about that:
"Man, I like that distinction," Parker says. "I'm ready for that. I'm more than prepared to take on the challenges and exciting things that are going to happen. And I think it's awesome to be a Millennial … my generation is ready to lead."
Parker has 17 years worth of experience in public service, most recently serving as Chief of Staff for Mayor Betsy Price and the city council. In her new role as mayor, Parker says she wants to focus on the economy as Fort Worth recovers from the pandemic, as well as building relationships at city hall.
At a time when Fort Worth is becoming more politically and ethnically diverse, Parker says she wants to make sure that the local government is serving the entire community, and that no group of people is left behind.
"My job now is to reach across every sector of our community and say, 'How are we all going to be better together?'"
The swearing in ceremony for Parker, as well as several new members of the city council, will take place at 7 p.m.
