College basketball's oldest post-season tournament is moving its entire event to North Texas this Spring.
For more than 80 years, the National Invitation Tournament's (NIT) semi-finals and finals have been played in New York's Madison Square Garden with preliminary rounds being hosted by participating schools.
Now, in an effort to maintain safety from the Coronavirus, organizers are moving all rounds, including the Final Four, to the Comerica Center in Frisco and the UNT Coliseum in Denton.
Also, the NIT field will be cut from 32 teams to 16.
"We are thrilled to partner with the city of Frisco and Conference USA to host this year's NIT in the DFW area," Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker said. "The NIT has incredible history and tradition, and we are honored to co-host the event. We look forward to working with Conference USA to make the tournament special for participating student-athletes and coaches."
Play begins March 17th and concludes with the semi-finals and championship game on the 27th and 28th.
The NIT, which began in 1938, is the nation's oldest postseason tournament. In 2019, Texas won the NIT title. The 2020 tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
