Thirteen years ago, Karen Schrah's world was rocked by the death of her son, Zachary, from sudden cardiac arrest during a football practice.
"(At the hospital) our family was surrounded with a majority of the football team, coaches, teachers and hundreds of his friends," Schrah said. "I knew that there had to be something that I could do to raise awareness of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)."
Three months later, she started Living for Zachary. And more than a decade later, the main focuses are donating automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and providing free heart screenings.
So on Saturday (which happens to be the 13th anniversary of Zachary's death), Living for Zachary will offer free non-invasive heart screenings to youth and young adults in southern Dallas County.
The screenings will be held at the Center, located at 1800 Bonnie View Rd, Dallas, TX 75216. Appointments are required, and space is limited.
The event is open to students ages 12-22 who reside in the surrounding neighborhoods of the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center, including Cedar Crest, South Oak Cliff and southern Dallas County.
