DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - For the first time, Smoothie King is joining forces with the North Texas Food Bank to help people struggling with food insecurity.

The partnership is due largely to Wan Kim, CEO of Smoothie King, who recently became a board member for the North Texas Food Bank.

"He's really come in and made a tremendous impact in a short period of time," says Danielle Dow, Events and Marketing Manager for the North Texas Food Bank. "This was actually his idea. We're really grateful that he jumped in with both feet and we were able to come up with this concept and turn it around so quickly."

Dow says in North Texas, 1 in 6 people are food insecure or don't know where their next meal is coming from. She says the fundraiser makes it easy for people to help. Here's how it works: Anyone at a Smoothie King in the Dallas area has the option to donate either $1 or $5 to the NTFB at checkout. It may not sound like much, but Dow says the fundraiser has already had a hugely positive impact on the food bank.

The fundraiser is running through the end of January, and Dow says she hopes there will be more in the future. She says there are other ways to help the NTFB, too.

"We always say that the best way for people to get involved with the food bank, is to donate time," Dow says. "We always need volunteers. And of course, your voice. We always need people to advocate for other people to know how important hunger relief is in our community so that we can tackle this."
