Federal investigators on Wednesday released a preliminary report about a plane crash that claimed the life of a pilot earlier this month at Eagle Mountain Lake.

The National Transportation Safety Board identified the victim as 60-year-old Stephen Spence, who was the sole occupant of a Champion 7EC single-engine aircraft. Spence died when the plane crashed into the lake on Oct. 7.

According to the report, Spence departed from Flying Oaks Airport in Fort Worth, about three miles southwest of the lake, and was reportedly en route to an unknown location for lunch. Security footage from a lakeside property showed the aircraft descending at a steep 45-degree angle before hitting the water and coming to rest nose-down in approximately 10 feet of water.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
