A Dallas police officer died Wednesday after they were injured in a crash involving a wrong-way driver who "may have been intoxicated," police say.

Officer Jacob Arellano was driving on Spur 408 near Kiest Boulevard while on his way to start his shift at work around midnight Wednesday when a wrong-way driver in a sedan crashed head-on with the officer's SUV, according to the Dallas PD official press release.

Following the initial collision, Arellano's SUV was also hit by a tractor-trailer and rolled several times before coming to a complete stop on the right shoulder of Spur 408.

Dallas City Council member Gay Donnell Willis first tweeted the news at 11:23 a.m. that the officer passed away at the hospital.

Dallas police Chief Eddie Garcia confirmed the news later Wednesday and identified the officer as Jacob Arellano.

Officer Arrellano had been taken into the hospital in critical condition while the wrong-way driver was also transported in serious condition.

Preliminary investigation shows the wrong-way driver may have been intoxicated tho this is still an ongoing investigation.

Officer Arellano had been assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division and had been a part of the Dallas Police Department since June of 2019. Funeral arrangements are still pending. Arellano is survived by his parents, girlfriend and infant child.
