A high-speed chase through Rockwall County late Monday ended with one person dead and another facing charges, police say.

The incident began when a Rockwall County sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a vehicle with an obscured temporary tag. The driver refused to pull over, leading to a chase along FM 548. During the pursuit, a passenger in the car fired at the deputy, according to the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office.

The passenger eventually jumped out of the moving vehicle as the chase continued. The driver later crashed near the intersection of FM 548 and Interstate 30. Authorities found the driver inside the wrecked vehicle with severe injuries. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The passenger, identified as 18-year-old Ezekiel Angel Hernandez, survived the incident and has been charged with aggravated assault against a public servant.

The investigation is ongoing.
