Weatherford (1080 KRLD) - A Parker County dog is alive and well, thanks to the efforts of two sheriff's deputies.
Deputies Cody Hodges and Cole Harwell responded to a burning home on Wilson Bend Rd. in Millsap shortly after 3:15 a.m. Thursday morning.
Harwell says everyone got out of the home safely -- well, almost everyone.
"There was a dog on the northeast corner of the house," Harwell says, "but they (the residents) presumed that it was already deceased because the flames were so intense on that side of the house."
But they found the black Labrador in a fenced-in pen, and he was very much alive.
"We could see the dog laying down," says Harwell, "and I could see its eyes with our flashlight, and it was behind the doghouse which was on fire as well."
The race against time to rescue the dog was on, and there was no time to spare.
"At this point, I decided to start tearing the fence down a little bit so I can hop over," says Hodges.
The dog had hid himself behind the doghouse.
"It was just hunkered down, and it was on a chain, and it couldn't get anywhere from the flames any further than it already was," says Harwell.
Now the task was to free the dog from the chain, which was no easy feat.
"He (Hodges) was trying to undo the chain," says Harwell. "He couldn't get it by himself, so I crossed over with him. And we were able to undo the dog from the chain."
"It took the two of us -- one person to hold the clasp open and the other person to twist the chain," Hodges added.
Harwell then carried the dog to safety.
"I carried the dog over the fence," says Harwell, "and then the dog ran off for a few minutes when they put it down, and then the dog came back a few minutes later and was just happy as ever."
Because of Harwell and Hodges' heroics, the dog escaped without any injuries.
"There was no harm to the dog at all," says Harwell. "He was just scared. That was it."
