Weatherford (1080 KRLD) - Deputies in Parker County rescue dogs and cats living in disgusting conditions.
On Tuesday, the deputies were called to a home on Newsome Mound Rd., northeast of Weatherford.
"The smell coming from the residence is what actually alerted neighbors that there might be something wrong," says Chief Deputy Mark Arnett.
What deputies found were seven dogs and cats living in extremely disgusting conditions.
"When the deputies got there, they did notice the smell," says Arnett. "And they were able to look through the windows and saw animals in pretty much deplorable conditions."
The stench was so bad that the deputies' skin and eyes starting burning the moment they tried to enter.
"The officers had to basically put on Tyvek suits and SCUBA gear to go in," Arnett says, "because the amount of toxic chemicals involved with chemicals in the air, due to the fecal matter that's been building up over time."
The animals were taken to the North Texas Veterinary Hospital in Peaster, where doctors are working feverishly to save them.
"When we find animals in this condition, sometimes they're just too far gone," says Arnett. "Every attempt is going to be made to bring them back to full recovery."
Investigators are working to determine who owns the home and the animals.
