Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) is facing increased opposition from fellow Republicans as he seeks to maintain his leadership position.
Several GOP members of the Texas House of Representatives have voiced criticism of Phelan, with two lawmakers officially declaring their intention to challenge him for the speakership.
One of them is State Rep. David Cook (R-Mansfield). He announced his candidacy, arguing that House leadership should better represent the will of the majority party.
Rep. Tom Oliverson (R-Cyprus) and Shelby Slawson (R-Stephenville) have also announced a run for speaker.
Phelan, who has served as Speaker since 2021, will face a vote by House members to determine his future in the role.
