A 17-year-old is in custody after police say he attacked a woman with a hammer while she was jogging in Plano on Thursday. The assault happened along a residential jogging route when the teen allegedly struck the woman twice before she fought him off, causing him to run from the area.
Plano police later identified the suspect as Sergio Noe De Nova Duarte and arrested him a short time after the attack. Investigators say the woman suffered injuries but was able to provide enough information to help officers locate the suspect.
Police also say the teen did not have legal immigration status in the U.S., a detail they confirmed after taking him into custody. He is being held on a federal immigration detainer.
The case remains under investigation, and officers have not released information about a possible motive.
