Lake Worth (1080 KRLD) - A police chase that started in Lake Worth Friday morning ended with an officer-involved shooting several miles away in Fort Worth. Lake Worth police say the chase started around 2:00 a.m. when an officer was running radar along Loop 820.
Chief J.T. Manoushagian says an officer spotted a car going at least 20 miles more than the speed limit. He says the car refused to stop and was turning off its lights to try to escape.
"During the pursuit, we received word from a neighboring department that the occupants of the vehicle should be considered armed and dangerous, which is one of the primary reasons we continued the pursuit," he says.
Manoushagian says the chase continued onto I-30 and into Fort Worth, with the car exiting at Horne Street. He says the car hit something on Horne, blowing a tire. Manoushagian says the car kept going until hitting a curb several blocks away, south of Camp Bowie Boulevard.
Manoushagian says three people got out of the car. He says one had a gun and pointed it at officers, leading an officer to return fire. He says investigators do not yet know how many times the officer fired or how many times the suspect was hit.
"After the individual was shot, officers immediately began to render aid. The officers went back to their car. We have specialized trauma kits we carry with us," Manoushagian says. "Both officers immediately began to perform CPR and other life-saving measures until MedStar arrived."
The suspect was pronounced dead at JPS Hospital. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has identified him as Estevan Ramirez, 18, of Fort Worth.
Manoushagian says police are still looking for the two others who were involved.
"The driver will definitely be wanted on charges of evading arrest or detention," he says. "The passenger who is still outstanding we definitely want to get a hold of and speak to them, find out what happened, what their vantage point was."
Manoushagian says Fort Worth police and Grand Prairie have joined the investigation.
"We're a small department," he says. "We pride ourselves on our professionalism, but at the end of the day, we have limited resources. We lean on our neighboring departments to assist us."
Fort Worth Major Crimes was leading the investigation. The officer who shot the suspect is on administrative leave. No officers were hurt.
