Interim Dallas Police Chief Michael Igo reaffirmed the department's long-standing position on immigration enforcement on Thursday.

"The department general order regarding immigration remains in effect," he said. In accordance with this regulation, Dallas officers will not, and I quote from our general order, 'stop or contact any person for the sole purpose of determining immigration status.'"

He said this stance aims to build trust within the community and ensure that all residents feel safe reporting crimes and cooperating with law enforcement.

When asked about the department's stance on aiding any federal agencies with deportation efforts, Igo said last week they would not.

Igo's comments drew criticism from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R). Igo said the department's policy has been in place since 2017.
