Police Departments across the state are gearing up an October tradition: the Texas version of National Night Out. It's an event in which police and the communities they serve hang out and get to know each other.
In most places, National Night Out takes please the first Tuesday in August. But in Texas, August isn't the most comfortable months. So we celebrate the first Tuesday in October in hopes of having nice weather. It's called Texas Night Out. People across the state are being asked to turn on their lights and spend the evening outside getting to know their neighbors and community police officer.
"The bonds that are generated at events like Texas Night Out are what we appreciate the most," Rockwall police Lt. Aaron McGrew said.
Many cities, like Rockwall, are hosting events from 6 to 8 Tuesday night, but the exact times vary. The Dallas Police Department, for example, is throwing a block party at police headquarters at 5 p.m. Vendors are going to be there as well as good, entertainment, music and games.
