Officers in Arlington fatally shot a man who charged them with a knife on Thursday afternoon, police say.

Officers responded to a call about a possible stabbing at 4:41 p.m. Thursday in the 2700 block of Lawrence Road, Arlington police said.

Police said when officers arrived, they saw a man looking at them out a window, so they set up a perimeter and commanded the man to come outside and show his hands. The man walked outside holding a knife, police said.

After the man did not comply with commands to drop the knife, he "suddenly moved in the direction" of officers, police said. One officer then fired a shot at the man.

Police said the man fell to the ground but got back up and ran toward a wooded area.

Officers pursued the man, who turned back to face the police when he approached an embankment, police said. At that point, the same officer who shot the suspect the first time, fired again.

Police said the man then ran down the embankment but hit the ground once he got the bottom. A second officer deployed a taser and as police were detaining the man, they realized one of the gunshots had struck him.

Officers began to perform "life-saving measures," before the man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said no officers were injured in the incident.

Police said they returned to the location of the original call and did find anyone who was injured. They also checked local hospitals for reports of patients with a stab wound, but did not find any.

They said they had not ruled out the possibility that the man with the knife placed the original call to police.
