A Greenville police officer was shot and killed after trying to make a traffic stop Monday night. Greenville Police say 27-year-old Cooper Dawson pulled someone over on Pickett Street at about 7:40 p.m.

They say the stop led to a chase on foot, and Dawson was "ambushed and shot multiple times" behind a house nearby.

"Despite his critical injuries, Officer Dawson displayed exceptional courage, returning fire, and striking the suspect," Greenville Police wrote in a statement.

Both Dawson and the suspect were taken to Hunt County Regional Hospital. Dawson was then airlifted to Medical City Plano where he died Tuesday morning.

"We are heartbroken over the loss of Officer Cooper Dawson who selflessly put his life on the line to serve and protect our community," says Greenville Police Chief Chris Smith. "We ask that you keep Officer Dawson's family, our department, and the Greenville community in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time."

Smith says this was the Greenville Police Department's first line of duty death in more than 100 years.

Dawson leaves behind his wife Aubrey, a Royce City ISD teacher, and three children. The community held a prayer vigil outside Royce City High School on Tuesday night.

Dawson had previously worked for Garland Police for seven years before switching to Greenville about a year ago. He was a member of their SWAT team as well.

A procession to bring Dawson's body back to Greenville from Medical City Plano will begin Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Police identified the gunman as 25-year-old Christian Robert Sparger. He was in critical condition as of Wednesday morning.
