Texas A&M fans sit atop a new statewide poll nobody asked to win: most obnoxious college football fan base in Texas.
Overton Insights, in a survey done with the Texas Public Policy Foundation, asked likely voters, “Just for fun: which of the following college fan bases would you say is the most obnoxious?” Fieldwork ran Aug. 24-26 among 1,167 likely Texas voters, according to the firm’s posted crosstabs.
Aggie fans led with 29.7%. University of Texas fans were close behind at 27.4%, FOX 7 Austin and the San Antonio Express-News reported. Houston was third at 11.2%, then Texas Tech 10.3%, Baylor 9.6%, SMU 6.7%, and TCU 5.1%.
The split follows party lines. Republican voters tagged UT first, 31.9% to 24.1% for A&M. Democratic voters flipped it, 37% A&M to 20.9% UT. Voters 18 to 29 put Texas Tech first at 24.1%, FOX 7 reported, with A&M and UT further back.
Poll director Mark Cunningham said in a release quoted by the Express-News that it was “somewhat shocking” the two SEC brands ranked far above reigning Big 12 champion Texas Tech, a program that has drawn heat over NIL and the transfer portal.
The question was labeled “just for fun.” It does not measure crime, tickets, or on-field success. A&M has not won a national title in football in nearly a century, the Express-News noted, which did not stop respondents from handing the 12th Man the crown.
The same Overton/TPPF survey also asked Texans about Flock license-plate cameras and other policy items. The fan question was a sidebar that jumped into sports talk as the season opened.
