This past week saw the celebration of two national three-digit hotlines. 2-1-1 for free and anonymous access to local social service agencies and the new suicide prevention lifeline number 9-8-8. Helping lead the way for the latter was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Prescott was honored by the league for his contributions to helping prevent suicide by receiving the 2022 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. He attributed his efforts and motivation to his family.
“My mother inspired me and motivated me to be great beyond the circumstances, and it is in her honor that I started my foundation in 2017 and named it the Faith Fight Finish. The three words she left me and my brothers,” Prescott said while receiving the reward. “But since the work also honors my brother Jace, who, as you saw, passed from suicide during COVID in 2020 and I made a promise that would be one life taken, to save millions.”
Making good on his promise to honor his brother, Dak Prescott played a significant role in the creation of the national three-digit suicide prevention hotline 9-8-8.
Working with Las Vegas Raider Solomon Thomas and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, together they helped launch the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 9-8-8.
The hotline is a place where you can call, text, or chat instantly with trained counselors ready to listen, provide support, and connect you to immediate assistance and resources.
