Today is North Texas Giving Day, and even though times are hard, several local non-profits say they’re hoping people will still donate.

More than 3,300 nonprofits are set to participate in North Texas Giving Day this year. Many say COVID-19 has put a strain on them as they trying to meet increased need with less donations.

The non-profit Buckner International works with kids who have been abused or neglected and are in the foster care system. Chief Executive Albert Reyes says cases skyrocketed during the pandemic and his team is struggling to budget around all the increased need.

"This is all over and above our normal expenses," Reyes says. "We don't have a total amount because it continues to go up. And as the government regulations change, then we have another layer of required equipment or testing ... so it's really hard to put a number on it."

Tropical weather is also putting a strain on non-profits.

The Communities Foundation of Texas says last year, more than 50 million dollars was raised for local non-profits on Giving Day.
