The scathing sexual abuse report within the ranks of the Southern Baptist Convention has put the Prestonwood Baptist Church of Plano in the crosshairs.
The audit was done by Guidepost Solutions, which bills itself as a leader in domestic and international investigations says that Prestonwood Baptist Church hired a music pastor in the '80s named John Langworthy who sexually abused at least one teenage boy while in Plano.
"Former SBC President Jack Graham, when he was pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church, allegedly allowed an accused abuser of young boys to be dismissed quietly in 1989 without reporting the abuse to police," the report says. "The accused abuser, John Langworthy, later was charged with abusing young boys in Mississippi in 2011."
The report says Langworthy returned to Mississippi, where, in 2011, "he confessed to his congregation at the Morrison Heights Baptist Church in Clinton that he had committed ‘sexual indiscretions’ with teenage boys during his time at Prestonwood and before when he was in Mississippi."
Langworthy died in 2019, records show.
Mike Buster, Executive Pastor Prestonwood Baptist Church, has sent KRLD the following statement:
"Prestonwood categorically denies the way the report characterizes the incident 33 years ago. Prestonwood has never protected or supported abusers, in 1989 or since."
