Robocall claims Congressional candidate Susan Wright murdered husband

Fort Worth (1080 KRLD)- On the day before the special election in Congressional District 6, a robocall is going out to voters in the district that is raising eyebrows.

The narrator of the one-minute robocall claims that Susan Wright killed her husband, the late Congressman Ron Wright.

"Susan Wright murdered her husband," the robocall states. "She's now running for Congress to cover it up. According to confidential sources, Susan Wright obtained a $1 million life insurance policy on the life of her husband, the late Congressman Ron Wright, six months before his death."

Here is the robocall in its entirety; the narrator gives out Susan Wright's address, which KRLD has redacted:

Ron Wright passed away on February 7 from complications of COVID-19.

He had been battling lung cancer at the time.

Susan Wright has never been implicated in any wrongdoing of any kind in relation to her husband's death.

"It was almost unbelievable that anyone would make those assertions against Susan Wright," says Matt Langston, general consultant for the Susan Wright campaign. "It was a little shocking. I was disappointed in whoever put that out to voters."

Wright has notified law enforcement of the robocall.

"We have been working with law enforcement, including the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office, FBI, and the Attorney General's office," says Langston, "but we honestly don't know who is behind this kind of smear tactic and smear campaign."

Langston says this represents a new low in the often cut-throat world of political campaigns.

"Most campaigns do not ever stoop to a tactic like this," Langston says. "It's just a tactic that nobody condones and nobody would be willing to do."

Susan Wright released a statement on the robocall:

"This is illegal, immoral, and wrong. There's not a sewer too deep that some politicians won't plumb. Imagine it: someone is attacking my late husband, the love of my life, a man who gave me such joy in life. I will not let darkness rule. I live by the light of Christ and his truth will sustain me - as it sustained me when I lost my husband."
