The Dallas Mavericks are moving forward with plans to redevelop Dallas City Hall into a new NBA arena as part of their long-term future in the city.
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts confirmed Thursday that the team will submit a formal proposal to the City of Dallas for the downtown site in the coming days. The submission responds directly to the city’s “Open Call for Concepts” for the future of City Hall and surrounding properties, with a deadline of May 3.
The Mavericks have narrowed their arena search to two locations: the current City Hall site and the former Valley View Mall property in far North Dallas. They hope to select a site by summer.
The American Airlines Center lease expires in 2031. Welts has emphasized the team’s strong commitment to staying in Dallas and building a modern basketball-only arena surrounded by a mixed-use entertainment district that includes hotels, retail, residential units and public spaces.
Construction on such a project is estimated to take about 30 months, targeting an opening for the 2031-32 season.
The proposal follows the Dallas City Council’s 9-6 vote in early March to explore options for relocating city operations from the 48-year-old I.M. Pei-designed building. City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert has previously indicated the city is open to discussions that would keep both the Mavericks and Dallas Stars in Dallas long term.
If approved, the redevelopment could reshape a significant portion of downtown Dallas into a year-round destination.
