A Rowlett man is facing two possible federal life prison terms after pleading guilty to killing his ex-girlfriend.
35-year-old Andrew Charles Beard has admitted he killed 24-year-old Alyssa Burkett nearly two years ago.
Beard planned it out. He bought skin-darkening makeup, a phony beard, and even a "burner" pickup truck that was intended to be discovered and help cover his tracks. None of it worked.
Beard had gone to Burkett's employer in October 2020 where he shot her in the head with a shotgun. Realizing she was still alive, Beard stabbed Burkett 13 times.
Police quickly put the clues together, saw through the disguise, and busted Beard. But then it appeared Beard was going to make a high bond. Police realized Beard was also a pilot and feared he would try to escape, that's when the feds moved in and charged him with federal offenses that had no bond.
A federal judge will decide the sentence in October. Technically, the state murder case is still pending.
