The annual state sales tax holiday in Texas started at midnight and runs through Sunday. Shoppers can buy clothes, school supplies and other items without paying the sales tax. That means they'll save about $8 for every $100 they spend.
"This is the 22nd year of the back-to-school sales tax holiday. We think Texas consumers will save about $107.3 million," said Kevin Lyons with the Texas State Comptroller's Office. "We consider it a gain for the consumer. This is a good weekend to stock up on items that you didn't buy last year."
Items that qualify for the sales tax break include clothes, shoes, backpacks and school supplies priced under $100. A full list of qualifying items is on the State Comptroller's web site.
Lyons says the Comptroller's Office has received questions about whether face mask qualify for the sales tax discount. It depends on what type of mask is being purchased.
"If you by a cloth mask or a disposable fabric mask, those are tax exempt because they qualify as an item of clothing," said Lyons. "If you buy a heavy industrial mask for an N-95 mask, those are not tax-exempt."
