As the punishing heat continues across North Texas, the Salvation Army is reaching out to help people struggling the most.

According to experts, extreme heat is deadlier than floods, hurricanes and tornadoes. Around 1,500 heat-related deaths are reported each year and this Texas heat is dangerous. In an effort to keep everyone safe, especially the most vulnerable, the Salvation Army has opened cooling stations and is offering what it calls holistic services to help people beat the heat.

Those services include free fans, water and food when needed. They also offer financial assistance for people struggling to pay high energy bills.

Cooling stations are open in Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, Denton and Ellis counties.
