Republican Senators are taking to the Senate floor demanding passage of the SAVE America voting bill.
Senator John Cornyn of Texas invoked the famous words of the 16 President of the United States.
"President Abraham Lincoln famously laid out his vision for our nation in the Gettysburg Address when he talked about a government of the people by the people and for the people," Cornyn said. "What he was talking about was government by American citizens."
Democrats have argued the bill is nothing short of voter suppression. Cornyn says the only votes that will be suppressed will be from non-citizens who can't vote in the first place.
The bill would require proof of citizenship when registering to vote and photo ID at the polls.
The Bipartisan Policy Center says citizenship is already a requirement and instances of noncitizen voting are rare.
The House passed the measure last month. There is currently not a clear path to passage in the Senate.
