A Johnson County jury on Thursday sentenced Jerry Don Elders to death. He was convicted earlier this week of murder in the 2021 death of 61-year-old Robin Waddell while he was on the run from police.

Prosecutors made their case that Elders should be executed for carjacking and murdering a woman. They called Elders' sister, Kim Bamberg, who said her brother has been hooked on meth for years.

Meanwhile, the defense tried to convince at least one juror to vote against lethal injection, which would mean a mandatory prison term of life with no parole.

The date of execution has not yet been set.
