For those who want to beat the heat by heading to the local city pool, it will be easier to find a place to swim this year.

A year ago, cities like Richardson, Plano and Arlington were having trouble finding lifeguards and had to close pools and cut back on hours. This year things are improving.

For instance in Mesquite, Parks and Rec Director Elizabeth Harrell says more money is bringing more candidates.

"We were able to offer a little bit of an increase in pay for lifeguards, which gave us a little bit of breathing room to hire some more staff.  The city is also offering to certify the lifeguards, that does not mean that they can pass the training."

The city of Richardson says it will have all the pools open this year, fully staffed.

Plano says it has more lifeguards and will be able to open at least as many pools as last year.
