A 36-year-old North Texas dentist is facing a state jail felony charge after Sherman police say she treated patients while intoxicated at a pediatric dental office before officers were called to the scene.
Sherman police arrested Kelly Buck on Monday after responding to a report of a potentially impaired medical professional at an office in the 2300 block of North Loy Lake Road. According to police, officers were called by staff members who were concerned about Buck’s behavior while she was seeing patients.
Investigators said Buck showed signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests administered at the office. She was taken into custody and charged with performing surgery while intoxicated, a state jail felony under Texas law. Police have not said how many patients were treated during the time in question.
Authorities did not report any confirmed injuries connected to the incident. Sherman police said the case remains under investigation and could be forwarded to the Grayson County District Attorney’s Office for review.
Under Texas Penal Code 49.02 and related statutes, it is illegal to perform a surgical procedure while intoxicated. A state jail felony carries a potential penalty of 180 days to two years in a state jail facility and a fine of up to $10,000 if convicted.
The Texas State Board of Dental Examiners may also review the case to determine whether any professional disciplinary action is warranted. It was not immediately clear whether Buck has retained an attorney.
Sherman police said additional details could be released as the investigation continues.
Residents with concerns or additional information are encouraged to contact the Sherman Police Department.
