Southern Methodist University has received a giant donation from a Dallas CEO who hopes to spur on new entrepreneurs.

The donation the school calls one of the largest they've ever received came from William Spears, CEO of Dallas-based Cenergistic. Spears won't say how much he gave, but the school says it's the largest gift from a non-alumnus in its history.

Spears wants to establish a number of business school initiatives, like the Spears Accelerator which aims to seed and grow businesses launched by students and faculty.

Spears has made large donations before. In 2004, he gave his alma mater, Oklahoma State University, the largest academic gift in its history at the time. SMU has been bringing it in lately.

In 2019, SMU received a $100 million gift from the Galveston-based Moody Foundation.
