Sony Interactive Entertainment is discontinuing physical discs for new PlayStation games and transitioning to a fully digital model beginning in January 2028, the company announced Wednesday.
The shift reflects the industry’s move toward downloads as consumer demand for digital media continues to outpace physical copies. New titles will be available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and select retailers, though existing disc-based games and those releasing before the cutoff remain unaffected. Sony described the change as a natural evolution to better serve how most players access content today.
The decision comes as the video game industry sees declining physical sales. According to market data, spending on new physical games dropped to $1.5 billion in 2025—the lowest since tracking began in 1995. It marks a significant decline from the 2008 peak of $11.6 billion.
Sony, which launched the first PlayStation with a CD-ROM drive in 1994, has released multiple generations of consoles, with the PlayStation 5 as the current flagship. The announcement precedes the highly anticipated digital-only launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on Nov. 19, expected to be one of the biggest entertainment releases ever.
For North Texas gamers, the change means greater convenience through instant downloads but potential challenges for collectors who prefer physical copies or those with limited high-speed internet access. It also raises questions about game preservation and ownership in an increasingly digital landscape.
Sony officials say the transition aligns with broader consumer trends across entertainment, where streaming and digital platforms have become dominant. The company will continue supporting its massive installed base of consoles while encouraging players to embrace the PlayStation ecosystem.
Gamers in the DFW area can look forward to seamless access to future releases while Sony works to ensure a smooth shift for the community.
