The union that represents customer representatives and customer service agents at Dallas-based Southwest Airlines has ratified a new five-year contract.

The leadership of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers says the deal was approved "overwhelmingly".

"We were focused on securing an agreement that would make our members at Southwest Airlines the highest-paid workers in the airline industry," said IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President Richie Johnsen. "Ratifying this historic deal was good for our members and the customers who trust and fly Southwest Airlines."

The customer service employees will get a 13-percent pay raise when the contract goes into effect and a 25-percent general wage increase over four years.
