Southwest pilots don't like a company proposal to cut their pay to avoid furloughs.
Southwest airlines is reportedly working preserve its nearly 50-year record of never having furloughed workers, but last week Southwest CEO Gary Kelly warned it was going to seek pay concessions from the labor unions.
Southwest has asked the pilots union to okay a ten percent cut, but the polit's union is taking exception with the reduction in pay. The pilots worry that even if they take the cuts, the airline might still furlough pilots under clauses of Force Majeure which are common in contracts and free one or more parties from obligations due to what are sometimes called Acts of God, like war, natural disaster, crimes or, as in this case, epidemics.
The union says there are other options like voluntary time off at reduced pay and early retirement packages.
