Governor Greg Abbott and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced Thursday that SpaceX will construct a massive $16.8 billion semiconductor fabrication facility in Grimes County, located just east of College Station.

The project, dubbed the "Terafab," is set to become one of the largest manufacturing complexes in the world, spanning a planned 100 million square feet to consolidate microchip design, logic, memory, and advanced packaging under a single roof.

According to the Office of the Texas Governor, the initial phase of the development represents a $16.8 billion capital investment and will directly create 3,000 high-paying positions for engineers, technicians, and plant operators in Southeast Texas. The facility is engineered to scale up custom artificial intelligence microchips designed for both terrestrial applications and space missions.

"Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger," Governor Abbott said in a statement released Thursday. "The first-of-its-kind Terafab facility will accelerate chip production in Texas at an unprecedented scale, create thousands of good-paying jobs in Grimes County, and expand economic opportunity for generations of Texans."

Musk stated that the facility addresses a critical bottleneck in global silicon supply. "The Terafab is bringing cutting-edge manufacturing to America, creating thousands of high-paying jobs in the Lone Star State, and enabling us to produce AI chips at scale for use on Earth and in space," Musk said.

To secure the project, state officials extended a $30 million performance-based grant from the Texas Enterprise Fund. The project also qualifies under the state’s Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program. Iola Independent School District Superintendent Jeff Dyer confirmed that the district's board of trustees voted to approve local tax agreements with TeraFab AI, LLC to support the project.

Grimes County Judge Joe Fauth III praised the project as a "generational change" for the county positioned between College Station and Houston. No site safety issues or injuries have been reported as preliminary site preparations get underway.

What is Terafab and why should we care?

Terafab is a giant factory that makes computer chips (the tiny brains inside phones, cars, robots, and computers).

What it will do

It will make special, super-powerful AI chips that Tesla and SpaceX need.

These chips will go into:

  • Robot helpers (like Optimus)
  • Self-driving cars
  • Computers that might one day live in space

The cool part is that almost the whole process — designing, making, packaging, and testing the chips — will happen under one enormous roof. Most chip factories only do one piece of the job.

Why we should care

Right now the world can’t make enough of these advanced chips for all the AI and robots people want. Building this huge factory in Texas means:

  • Thousands of good jobs
  • More of the important chips made in America instead of overseas
  • Faster progress on robots, self-driving cars, and big AI projects

In short: it’s a massive American chip factory meant to power the next wave of smart machines.
