Dallas Animal Services is encouraging North Texans to celebrate Valentine's Day weekend by spending time with shelter dogs through adoption events, staycations, and daytime outings designed to get pets out of kennels and into loving homes.
Valentine Staycations allow participants to bring a dog home for the holiday weekend. Pickup is scheduled Friday, February 13, between 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., with returns on February 15 or 16. Participants can coordinate drop-off times with staff and have the option to extend fostering beyond the weekend.
Doggie Daycations offer shorter commitments, letting residents take a shelter dog out for a few hours. Pickup times are available Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m., and Sunday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The shelter suggests activities like hiking trails, shopping trips, or visiting coffee shop patios, while asking participants to stay within Dallas city limits and avoid dog parks.
A recent study by The Hockaday School found that more than 90 percent of dogs participating in Dallas Animal Services daycations achieved positive outcomes, including adoption, fostering, rescue placement, or reunification with previous owners.
All participants must be 18 or older. Those interested in daycations can sign up at BeDallas90.org/doggie-daycations. Questions about staycations can be directed to DASfoster@dallas.gov, while volunteer inquiries should go to DASvolunteer@dallas.gov.
The shelter is located at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road in Dallas.
