The legal battle between the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars over control of the American Airlines Center takes a sharp turn as the Stars argue in newly filed court documents that the Mavericks are no longer a Dallas-based franchise, but are instead headquartered in Las Vegas.
The filing, submitted this week, says the Mavericks’ owners designated Las Vegas as the team’s principal corporate and executive office in 2024, allegedly violating the franchise’s agreement with the City of Dallas.
That agreement requires the Mavericks to maintain their corporate headquarters within Dallas city limits — the same provision the Mavericks accuse the Stars of violating by keeping their own headquarters in Frisco since 2003. The dispute is part of a broader lawsuit over long-term control of the arena and the conditions tied to each team’s original operating agreements with the city.
The clash between the two franchises comes as both organizations navigate major changes on and off the ice and court, with the American Airlines Center remaining a central asset in Dallas’ sports and entertainment landscape. The case continues to move through the courts, and additional filings are expected.
