On Monday we learned more than 2.5 million people had attended the State Fair of Texas that wrapped up Sunday night. But now we know that was a record.

The State Fair gives says the final attendance figure added up to 2,547,289 people. That tops the 2019 record of 2,514,637.

A lot of factors contributed to the record-busting number. For one, this year's weather was near perfect. Significant rain fell on just one day of the fair's 24-day run.

Another is probably pent-up demand after the 2020 Fair was canceled because of the pandemic. Even last year, there was lingering fear of the Coronavirus but this year that did not seem to be a problem.

The biggest day this year was October 8th, the day of the Texas-Oklahoma Red River Showdown game when more than 207,000 people came through gates. Nearly half of them came for the game but a ticket to the Cotton Bowl includes admission to the State Fair so a lot of those football fans stayed for the fair, as well.

Incidentally, today's the day Big Tex will be taken down and allowed to rest up for next year's Fair which begins on September 29th.
