The pause on a Texas immigration law that was due to expire tomorrow has been extended to next Monday by US Supreme Court justice Samual Alito.

This latest move extends an order blocking Texas police and state troopers from arresting people suspected of crossing the border illegally.

The law known as SB4 has been highly contentious between immigrant advocates and those seeking a stricter border policy.

Twelve years ago there was another case where the high court sided with the federal government against a similar Arizona law. In that case, Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the government's case and Dallas immigration expert, attorney Eric Cedillo says Robers could be a crucial vote again.

Last month, a federal judge prohibited Texas from enforcing SB4. That ruling was paused by the 5th US Circuit of Appeals.

SCOTUS justice Alito initially suspended that order on administrative grounds through Wednesday, before extending it until next week. The 5th Circuit is slated to hear arguments on the merits of SB4 in April.
