Some Taco Bell restaurants, including locations in Metro Detroit, have temporarily stopped serving lettuce, guacamole, pico de gallo and cilantro onion after posting signs citing a nationwide recall tied to a cyclospora parasite outbreak.

The signs inform customers that the chain is “currently unable to sell” those produce items due to the recall. Menu offerings remain available without the affected toppings, and Taco Bell has not been identified as a source of any illnesses.

Cyclosporiasis, the intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite, produces symptoms including “explosive” watery diarrhea. Health officials report the parasite has sickened nearly 1,500 people across the United States in recent weeks. Michigan is experiencing a record outbreak with over 1,200 cases concentrated in southeastern counties such as Wayne, Oakland, Monroe and Washtenaw.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state health departments are investigating the source, which is believed to involve contaminated fresh produce. No specific grower or supplier has been publicly linked to the cases at this time.

Taco Bell’s action appears precautionary as officials work to contain the spread. Customers in affected areas may notice the missing ingredients on items like tacos and nachos until supplies are restored.

Health experts recommend thorough washing of produce and seeking medical care for persistent gastrointestinal symptoms. No deaths have been reported in connection with the current outbreak.

The situation highlights ongoing challenges with foodborne parasites in the U.S. food supply. Officials continue monitoring cases nationwide while urging vigilance around fresh fruits and vegetables.
