Police say a jail inmate tried to escape from the Lon Evans Correction Facility in Fort Worth this morning through a 5th floor window.

It happened around 3:40 a.m. Police say 39-year-old Jeremiah Stevenson used a fire extinguisher and a fire hose to smash through the window and climb down the building.

But, Lt. Jennifer Gabbert with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says, he didn't make it far. "By 4 a.m. a sergeant in patrol had located the subject and taken him into custody," Lt. Gabbert says.

Police say Stevenson was injured while trying to escape. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital to be treated for various lacerations.

Before the attempted jailbreak, Stevenson was being held on several charges: aggravated robbery, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest or detention and indecent exposure.

Lt. Gabbert says Stevenson is now expected to face new charges.
