When it comes to paying your property taxes, there are several "do's" and one big "don't."
Tarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Wendy Burgess is urging you not to pay your property taxes through the U.S. Mail, citing a sharp increase in mail theft.
"There have been a handful of instances where Tarrant County taxpayers have been affected by checks not being delivered appropriately through the mail system," Burgess tells KRLD News.
Burgess says the very best ways to pay are either online or at one of the tax office's eight locations throughout Tarrant County.
"We have online wait times (for) all of our locations as well," Burgess says, "so they can time their visit to the branches."
And you don't even have to wait at the branch if you don't want to.
"We also have our own drop boxes within the building that are under our control," Burgess points out.
You can pay with an electronic check at no additional cost, or you can use a debit or credit card for a small convenience fee charged by the card company.
You can also pay by phone by calling 817-884-1100 during normal business hours.
Burgess says the number of people who still pay via U.S. Mail might surprise you.
"This past fiscal year, 38% of our payments, which comprises about $2.4 billion, actually come in in physical checks," says Burgess.
Property tax bills are being sent out this month.
