Texas Christian University broke ground Tuesday on a new development aimed at expanding student housing and revitalizing the area east of campus.

The project, announced earlier this month, includes two apartment-style residential buildings along with retail and restaurant space at the intersection of W. Berry Street and Cockrell Avenue. The development will add more than 700 student beds by 2027.

University officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday to mark the start of construction. The project is a partnership between TCU and Endeavor Real Estate Group, based in Austin.

The mixed-use development is part of a broader plan to create a new southern gateway to the TCU campus and better integrate the university with the surrounding Fort Worth community.
