Freshmen at Texas Christian University will not longer be called freshmen.

TCU is joining a growing list of schools, including Yale and Penn State, that are choosing to nix the freshman moniker for something more gender inclusive.

Starting this fall, TCU will officially refer to new students as first years, not freshmen. This applies to any student with less than 24 credit hours, regardless of how long they’ve actually been enrolled in school.

Officials with TCU say the term is not new, it's been in use for more than three decades. In fact, 20 years ago, TCU established the First-Year-Experience program.

The name change takes effect on the first day of the academic year, August 21.
