As the seasons shift and colder weather moves into DFW, drivers may notice their vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light coming on more often. Experts say changes in temperature can directly affect tire pressure, which can impact safety and vehicle performance.

“When air becomes cooler, it takes up less volume, causing tire pressure to decrease,” said a local shop manager. “Conversely, warmer air expands, increasing the pressure in your tires.”

Drivers are advised to check their tire pressure regularly, especially during seasonal transitions, and adjust as needed. However, experts caution against overcorrecting, as air pressure can fluctuate throughout the day with temperature changes from morning to afternoon.

Maintaining proper tire pressure helps improve handling, fuel efficiency, and tire longevity, making regular checks an important part of vehicle maintenance.
