Texas A&M Forest Service uses DC-10 aircraft to drop fire retardant

Texas A&M Forest Service uses huge DC-10 to drop fire retardant
DAVID MCNEW / Stringer

Those living in Somervell County have been seeing one of the biggest fire-fighting airplanes around.

The Texas A&M Forest Service has brought in from California a full-size DC-10 aircraft specifically equipped to drop 12,000 gallons of fire retardant at a time.

Called the Very Large Air Tanker (VLAT) the plane has been making drops on the Chalk Mountain fire, assisting ground units in trying to stop the fire's progress.

Many people are quite shocked to see and hear such a large plane flying at low altitude, as low as 2,000 feet as it swoops in to make a drop. Some have even called 911, fearing the plane was going to crash.
