Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says he is now recovering from a heart procedure in Fort Worth. He was admitted to Texas Health Harris Methodist last Saturday.

Miller says he started experiencing shortness of breath and chest discomfort Friday night. After he was admitted, his office says Miller underwent surgery to place a stent in an artery to clear a blockage.

Miller says he expects to be released from the hospital later this week and continue recuperating at home.

"I can now add heart surgery to my list of medical mishaps and challenges which include numerous rodeo injuries, broken bones, hip, double knee replacement, shoulder surgery, West Nile virus, Covid and cancer. I guess that list just makes me Texas tough," Miller wrote in a statement, saying he and his wife "feel very blessed to be serving the greatest state in the land and the people we're proud to call our 'Fellow Texans.'"

Miller, 66, was first elected agriculture commissioner in November 2014 and is up for reelection in 2022. Prior to becoming agriculture commissioner, he had served six terms in the Texas House of Representatives from District 59 in Central Texas starting in 2001, losing in the Republican primary in 2012.
