Two airports in North Texas are receiving grants for improvements as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure measure. The FAA announced a total of one billion dollars in grants Thursday.
“Americans deserve modern airports that meet the needs of their families and growing passenger demand. Funded through President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, today’s grants will improve airport terminals while also creating good jobs in communities across the country,” Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wrote in a statement.
DFW Airport is receiving $35 million to build a zero-carbon central utility plant as part of the airport's goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2030. The first part of construction will cover two terminals. The second phase will cover the other three and Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Arlington Municipal Airport is receiving $540,000 to replace its HVAC system.
"This is a low cost project with good return value that will contribute to sustainability, energy efficiency, and reduced service disruptions," the FAA wrote in its description of Arlington Municipal Airport's project.
The FAA says the grants focused on five areas:
1. Expand capacity at our nation’s airport terminals
2. Increase energy efficiency
3. Promote competition
4. Provide greater accessibility for individuals with disabilities
5. Build two new air traffic control towers
Six other airports in Texas are receiving grants. The largest amount was approved for Bush Intercontinental in Houston, which is receiving $40 million to add gates, ticket counters and security checkpoints.
