Texas firefighters helping battle blazes in other states

Officials say 34 personnel from the Texas A&M Forest service are fighting fires in seven states.

Erin O'Connor with the Forest Service says most are firefighters but some are in support roles such as finance, public information and aviation.

She says every state has a finite amount of resources so other states pitch in to help. "When we're in need or other states are in need, or things are too busy they can request assistance from other states and partners and we will send whatever we can to help them out. They've done the same for us countless times in the past. We're happy to do the same for them."

The states Texas is helping are Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, Alaska, New Mexico and Florida and Utah.

Every Texan will stay for at least two weeks.  There is potential to extend that to 21 days and even then, they can take a rest in place and go back for another 2 week or 21 day assignment.

O'Connor cautions were going into the Fourth of July Holiday, and even though fire potential is low, fires as possible.  She says please be safe with fireworks and be careful how you celebrate.
