Texas Instruments broke ground Wednesday on the first part of its planned $30 billion development in Sherman. TI says it will build up to four semiconductor plants at a site along U.S. Highway 75.

"When historians look back some years from now and try to chart the course of Sherman's history, I believe today will jump off the page," Mayor David Plyler said at the groundbreaking. "Today is the day when Sherman's trajectory of growth and prosperity gets much steeper."

Texas Instruments said the project will generate 3,000 jobs when completed. The 4.7 million square foot facility is being built to meet future demand.

The facility will produce 300-millimeter semiconductors. Worldwide demand for microchips has surged with increased demand for computers, gaming consoles and in automobiles. A shortage has led to production cuts for automakers.

"We have great demand for it here in the State of Texas. The world has great demand for it," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) said. "You are going to play a role in making Texas the leading chip manufacturing state in the United States of America."

"TI has been a pillar of Texas industry for well over half a century, supporting more than 10,000 jobs and helping define America's culture of innovation," U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said.

Texas Instruments closed an older facility in Sherman in 2020. Plyler said the expansion and new campus could also draw other tech companies to Sherman.

"What a special day it is," he said. "In fact, in the 175 year history of our wonderful little town, I doubt there are many days that could hold a candle to this one."

Texas Instruments expects the first part of the factory to open in 2025.
