Texas lawmakers will return to Austin for another special session next week, and this session will start amid growing calls for the Texas House speaker to resign.
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan already has two republican opponents in his primary for reelection next year. Earlier this year, former President Donald Trump even posted online, calling Phelan a "Rhino" and barely a Republican at all when the Texas House voted to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Last month, a Texas GOP committee passed a resolution calling for Phelan's resignation. Rhelan hasn't responded to those calls directly, but he did write an op-ed in the Beaumont Enterprise, saying the Texas Senate put politics over principles in acquitting Paxton in the impeachment trial.
He says he stands by his vote and by his belief that Paxton's conduct is beneath the office he holds, saying the evidence speaks for itself.
